What is BIM?

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is changing how buildings, infrastructure, and utilities are planned, designed, built, and managed. Autodesk, the market leader in BIM solutions helping to turn information into insight and delivering business value at every step in the process.

BIM is a process that involves creating and using an intelligent 3D model to inform and communicate project decisions. Design, visualization, simulation, and collaboration enabled by Autodesk BIM solutions provide greater clarity for all stakeholders across the project lifecycle. BIM makes it easier to achieve project and business goals.

There are many definitions of what BIM is and in many ways it depends on your point of view and what you seek to gain from the approach.  Sometimes it’s easier to say what BIM isn’t!

  • It’s not just 3D CAD
  • It’s not just a new technology application
  • It’s not next generation, it here and now!

BIM is essentially value creating collaboration through the entire life-cycle of an asset, underpinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent, structured data attached to them.
